New Water

“New” Water for the Los Angeles Region

The biggest proposals to create “new” sources of drinking water are Pure Water Southern California and Hyperion 2035/Operation Next. Both programs involve purifying the cleaned water from a wastewater (sewage) treatment plant and replenishing groundwater with the purified water. Purified water may also provide an additional supply into drinking water plants. Both programs will produce purified water that meets or exceeds all federal and state requirements.

Imported water volumes are limited. These programs would benefit everyone from Ventura County to San Diego by adding to the region’s water supplies. New local water supplies would improve reliability and help protect us from climate change.
